It's not just about weightloss, but the changes you make now will mean lasting improvements to your health as well as boosting your confidence and body image, and helping you sleep.
Where are you now?
It's not just about setting goals, it's about recognising where you are now. Big goals are more likely to be achieved than easier goals (because it requires more commitment), but whatever the goal, you'll need to break it into smaller steps to make sure you can get there. For example, you might aim for a 10km run, but you'd need to start out by gradually improving your fitness. Your first step might be a few minutes' brisk walking.
Measure where you are now. How do you feel when you run up a flight of stairs? Which pair of trousers are you aiming to look great in? What's your current resting heart rate? Things like this are good ways to measure improvement. As we get fitter, it's important to stay motivated, and we can do this by seeing how far we've come – and celebrating it.

Don't overcook it
It's tempting when we're highly motivated (and motivation fluctuates in all people) to do a bit much. Go for moderation (it's untrendy, but those who keep things in moderation have better and further reaching results). If you try to do too much too soon, it's difficult to maintain that standard, and also, it's likely your body isn't quite ready for that yet. It's about training not exercise. Doing more isn't necessarily going to get you more and better results – but it is going to make you think you deserve them!
Be nice to yourself
Any addition to your current weekly routine is progress. Consider where you are now is '1', and where you want to be is '10'. Anywhere above 1 is an improvement that you can celebrate. You don't need to be perfect all the time for lasting improvement, you just need to be a little bit better. And we can do that, right?
Take it easy. If I can help you improve your long-term health and fitness, I'm right here.
