ditching your endless diet cycle

Ditch the diet cycle

by Angela Reed-Fox

Got a diet cycle that's unending?
  1. You decide it's time you did something
  2. You eat less
  3. You either stop dieting because you've got to where you're going, or you give up
  4. Weight comes back on
  5. Repeat endlessly
Apart from the diet cycle being horrible, it's also self-perpetuating because when you restrict your food intake your metabolism can slow down to compensate. Your metabolic rate is the rate you burn fuel (calories). When you've dieted for a while, your metabolism slows even more so you'd be tempted to think you need to keep eating less in order to keep losing weight.

When you stop your diet (for whatever reason) your metabolism doesn't just spring back to its pre-diet rate, no, because that would be too nice. It tends to stay sluggish – and when you decide you want to diet again in the future, your metabolism obliges by slowing down even further. Each time you diet, your metabolism slows, meaning your body becomes expert at storing energy as fat. That's why yo-yo dieting is a thing. And that is why diet companies are successful – they enjoy repeat business!

The problem is, you're a finely-tuned survival machine! So what can you do?

Working with your body rather than against it will get you the results you want.
  1. Protect your metabolism by making sure you get a moderate level of exercise during the week – this not only burns calories but keeps your metabolism chugging away
  2. Don't be hungry. Fibre and protein keep you feeling fuller for longer. Think about eating differently rather than eating less.
  3. Make dieting just something that other people do by learning more about yourself, your lifestyle and how your body works – and you'll never need to diet again. Money saved. Misery saved.
