Taking lifestyle in tiny steps is your easiest way to success. Make small changes, and sustain them over a long period. Here are 8 tips you can get started on today:
Aim for at least 5-10 portions of fruit or vegetables each day. Seem like a lot? They're your secret weapon and will serve to fill you up without you resorting to other food higher in carbs or fat.
Note your food intake as well as any calories burned in physical activity. This will help you consider whether you really want that caramel shortcake if you know you'll have to make a note of it!
Exchange rather than cut out. Like cheese? Instead of Cheddar, choose Edam which is lower in fat. Alternatively, light mozzarella or cottage cheese is a great alternative.
Avoid seconds. Second helpings are liable to knocking you off balance with your healthy intentions. Take what you need, and stick to it. Don't go back for more.
Size matters. It's official. Check your portion size - we often eat portion sizes we're used to rather than the smaller portions we need.
Read labels - know the difference between 'low fat' and 'low calorie'.
Be prepared - have a meal plan and stick to it. Not only does this mean you're less likely to go astray, you're more likely to make healthy choices - and more likely to stick to them as it was you who made the decision!
Make small, sustainable change - don't make a change you're not happy to keep going in the long-term. If it's going to feel like purgatory - don't do it.
